Oil level control

- Oil is an important part of an industrial refrigeration system, since it contributes by:
- Lubricating the moving parts of the compressor and reducing the heat produced through friction in the moving parts
Unfortunately, all the oil does not remain in the compressor house; instead, it gets transported around the system together with the refrigerant. The transport of oil takes place through pistons and piston rings, and also in connection with starting/stopping the compressor. The system's operational pressure also influences how much oil is sent around in the system, with more oil migrating in CO2 systems than in ammonia refrigeration systems. In newer compressors there is less migration than in older models, partially because of more wear and tear, and partially because of the design, which has been optimised over the years.
The leakage can, in the worst case scenario, lead to damage to the compressor. Over time, the refrigerant's properties change, which results in a reduction of the cooling capacity by up to 30%.
The system's operation and reliability can be optimised in part by controlling the oil level in the compressor as optimally as possible, as well as by removing oil from the refrigerant.
